HAMBURGER HEAVEN Posted on July 13, 201620 Comments

What thoughts come to mind when you hear the word hamburger? Well, for me first my mouth starts to water and then my mind goes back to sitting on the shore of the lake with my cousins eating fresh grilled burgers singing Jimmy Buffet’s amazing ode to the cheeseburger.

 Cheeseburger in paradise.
Heaven on earth with an onion slice.
Not too particular, not too precise.
I’m just a cheeseburger in paradise.

A hamburger is not just a main dish in a casual lunch or dinner, it is an American icon. It can bring you back to fond memories or make you want to get in your car and drive to your favorite burger joint. Now the coolest thing for me is it does not mean the same thing to any one person.

I like mine with lettuce and tomato
Heinz 57 and french fried potatoes
Big kosher pickle and a cold draught beer
Well, good God Almighty which way do I steer

My mom, who is a baby boomer, tells stories of drive in dates with juicy hamburgers and thin cut french fries. Her and my father would cruise to Frisch’s Big Boy drive in, meet up with friends and always end the night with a burger and shake. My daddy passed away about 7 years ago, and when mom tells these stories it always makes her smile.

Makin’ the best of every virtue and vice.
Worth every damn bit of sacrifice
To get a cheeseburger in paradise;
To be a cheeseburger in paradise.
I’m just a hamburger in paradise.

My girl “K” said a hamburger is not a meal, but an experience. Thoughts of going out to Dairy Lane with her grandparents came flooding back. Dairy Lane trips were not a mere meal, but an adventure. It started out with a gooey cheeseburger and fries served with the best homemade cherry coke, and ended with a hand dipped ice cream cone. It seems that smile when talking about hamburger memories is contagious.

Cheeseburger in paradise medium rare with mustard’d be nice
Not too particular, not too precise
I’m just a cheeseburger in paradise.

My daughter Becca is creating her own burger memories. She is a Steak N’ Shake kind of girl. And her fond burger memories include after prom meals and dates with her long time boyfriend,  “Big Country”, where he ends up eating most of her burger.  Oh wait, there’s that smile.
I know I shared one of my favorite childhood burger memories, but my #1 memory occurred a little bit later in life. It involves two poor 20 year olds and a bag of Checkers burgers. Nathan and I had moved into our first apartment. We had a bed and some kitchen appliances, and that was about the extent of our worldly possessions. We were as broke as a joke, but when Nathan would come home with our Checkers meal and we would sit on the bed, eat, and laugh we were as rich as kings. There is something about red onions, gooey American cheese, and thick slices of tomato that just made the day better.  Oh yeah, and just thinking of those newlywed memories is making me smile.
So, what are your favorite burger memories? Do you have one? Well if you don’t go make some.
